How do I know if I am a hoarder?
If you have more "stuff" than you want to have and find you are unable to let most of it go, you may very likely have "hoarding mentality".
What is a hoarding mentality?
A persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of actual value, occurs. A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of the items.
What is the difference between clutter and a hoard?
The main difference is that clutter is typically defined as a state of being messy where as a hoard is having a large amount of something. It is possible that someone could be a very organized hoarder who does not have any clutter, although usually clutter and challenging disorganization is part of a hoard.
What are the 5 levels of a hoard?
These are the simplified characteristics and are subjective based on the individual.
Level 1 - Low; minor clutter or "stuff" exists, but causes no issues with functionality.
Level 2 - Progressive; multiple surfaces are covered with "stuff" (countertops, tables, desks, furniture) but the home is still usable and there are open floor spaces.
Level 3 - Elevated; in addition to surfaces, the perimeters of room(s) start filling as well, "stuff" is encroaching on the main living spaces.
Level 4 - High-risk; most areas are now impeded by "stuff" and functionality is highly compromised.
Level 5 - Extreme & Severe; the "stuff" has taken over and rooms are not able to be entered, ingress and egress may be completely blocked, potential structural hazards and fire dangers present, odors are typically very strong, often included rodent and insect infestations.
Are there different types of hoarders?
